About the test

What is the Menopause Rating Scale?

A clinically validated tool

The Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) is one of the most widely used tools for assessing symptoms during menopause. The scale was developed in Germany in the 1990s and has since been validated across cultures and languages. It is used today by doctors, researchers and health organizations to track how symptoms develop over time.

Three categories, eleven questions

The MRS covers three areas. The somatic domain measures things like hot flashes, sleep and joint and muscle pain. The psychological domain covers low mood, irritability, anxiety and exhaustion. The urogenital domain covers bladder problems, dryness and sexual problems. Together they give a more nuanced picture than a simple list.

How to interpret your score

Each question is scored from 0 to 4. The total ranges from 0 to 44. There is no universal threshold for when to start treatment. The MRS is most useful for tracking changes over time and for giving your doctor a clear starting point for the conversation.

When should you talk to your doctor?

Consider contacting your doctor if your symptoms affect your daily life or sleep, if you score in the moderate to marked range, or if individual symptoms are particularly bothersome. Bringing a completed MRS test to your appointment makes it easier for your doctor to understand what you are experiencing.

How Menoa can help you further

We are building an app where you can take the MRS test monthly, see how your symptoms change over time, and bring a clear summary to your doctor. The app is not ready yet, but you can sign up for the waitlist at the end of the test.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS)?

The MRS is a clinically validated self-assessment scale that measures menopause-related symptoms. It was developed in Germany in the 1990s and is used today in both clinical practice and research worldwide.

How is the test scored?

Each of the 11 questions is scored from 0 (none) to 4 (very severe). Sub-scores for the three categories — somatic (0-16), psychological (0-16) and urogenital (0-12) — are added together to give a total score between 0 and 44.

Can the test make a diagnosis?

No. The MRS is a tool for mapping symptoms, not a medical assessment. It cannot determine whether you are in menopause or what is causing your symptoms. Use the result as a starting point for a conversation with your doctor.

Are my answers stored?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser, and we don't send anything to a server. If you choose to sign up for our waitlist at the end, only your email address is stored.
